About the Islands

Chincoteague and Assateague are two unique barrier islands that sit between the Virginia mainland and the Atlantic Ocean. Assateague stretches for 37 miles (60 km) along the Maryland and Virginia coast and is home to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, the Assateague State Park, and the Assateague National Seashore Park.

Chincoteague, on the other hand, is the largest of the smaller islands situated between Assateague and the mainland. It encapsulates a long and shallow bay called Chincoteague Bay. Interestingly, Chincoteague was originally a barrier island until the mid-1800s when Assateague migrated so far south that it shielded Chincoteague from the ocean.

Life on Assateague Island is ever-changing, shaped by ocean winds, waves, and natural forces. Visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Whether you want to watch wild ponies, birds, or deer, or simply rest, relax, and enjoy the edge of the continent, Assateague offers a unique experience in harmony with nature.

About the Inn

Since the early 1960s Chincoteague has been a wildly popular tourist destination. Known for its pristine beaches, delicious seafood, and wild ponies, beach enthusiasts flocked to the town. The Watson Guest House, a bed and breakfast across the street from the Inn at Poplar Corner, was owned by a local family, the Sneads, who were so blessed with guests they bought two other cottages in the early 1990s to accommodate them. However, they still didn’t have enough rooms for their prospective guests so in 1995 the Sneads decided to build a Victorian inn across the street from the Watson House! The architectural model for the Inn at Poplar Corner was a breathtaking historic Victorian in Suffolk, Virginia.

About the Owners

Interested in all things Victorian, owners Diana Snigurowicz and Claude Steinberg, are pictured here at a Jane Austen ball. In August 2024, the Inn will be brought back to its full glory as a bed and breakfast. Diana, an inventive baker and passionate foodie, is a retired librarian who worked at the Library of Congress for over 20 years. She is the onsite manager, providing guests with appetizing breakfasts and baking up delectable treats for afternoon teas. Her husband Claude, a foodie in his own right, is a web analyst. He makes sure the Inn is in good working order. Longtime visitors and lovers of Chincoteague Island, Diana and Claude can both offer guests a wealth of information on activities and sight seeing to make your stay extra special.
